World production
Total production is about 2.6 million tonnes. Spain is the leading producer of olive oil and accounts for 44% of the world market, Italy 20% and Greece 13%. France is the smallest producer in the Mediterranean basin with 0.15% of the market. It produces 4,000 tons while its consumption is 90,000 tons. At the level of average consumption, it is Greece which leads with 20 KG / year and per inhabitants, Italy 12kg, and Spain 10 kg. In France we consume only 0.4 kg per year and per inhabitants. Evolution of the French market: Consumption of olive oil in France has been stagnating since 2008.
The differents PDO :
Whether France, Italy or Spain, these three countries have decided to protect their heritage by imposing PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). That is to say a geographical definition associated with a name allowing to identify different wines. In France, the CAO now becomes the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin).
